Guatemala scraps bill to ban same-sex ‘marriage,’ increase abortion penalties.

Guatemala’s Congress had overwhelmingly approved the “Protection of Life and Family” bill last week, with 101 out of 160 votes in favor and just eight against. But lawmakers voted to abandon the legislation on Tuesday, after a veto threat from the country’s conservative president and pressure from the Biden administration. One hundred and nineteen deputies voted to archive the bill indefinitely, InfoCatólica reported.

President Alejandro Giammattei, who touts himself as pro-life and pro-family, announced last Thursday that he would veto the bill if it reached his desk and called on Congress to shelve it. Giammattei said that the law violated international conventions that Guatemala has joined, as well as the Guatemalan constitution, which guarantees the right to life from conception.

What We Know About Paternity Leave.

Reading through the extensive research on the subject of paternity leave, you’d have to conclude that experts primary interest has not been family bonding, nor even involved fathers as a good in and of themselves, but the re-ordering of gender relations.

Fathers need to take care of their infant sons and daughters so that women will be freer to pursue their careers, or as economists sometimes put it, to reach their “full labor market potential.”

Paternity leave will ensure that fathers develop their childcare skills so they will stop viewing mothers as the default caretaker. That would allow women to shift some of their energies from domestic responsibilities to market work, to earn more money, and so bring about more gender equality. Women who cut back work hours, work part time, or maybe even stay at home to be with their children represent a retreat into the socially-constructed gender roles policy needs to overcome. Equality is all. Read more

Surrogate Babies of Ukraine Treated Like a Commodity.

There’s big money in baby farming, notes Jennifer Lahl, a former pediatric nurse who started the Center for Bioethics and Culture, and she warns, “There’s plenty of bad actors in big fertility.” Read more

5 Key Takeaways From Judge Jackson’s Hearing.

She said she would consider several factors in determining whether or not to reverse a precedent. However, Jackson made clear that she wouldn’t apply the standard to the landmark abortion rights case Roe v. Wade.

That case, which has faced challenges from GOP states, is “the settled law of the Supreme Court,” and Jackson made clear that, if faced with the decision to overturn it, she would rely on the precedent established in Roe v. Wade.

“Can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman’?” Blackburn asked.

“Can I provide a definition?” Jackson said. “No. I can’t. I’m not a biologist.” Read more

Religion

Hong Kong’s religious freedom now firmly in Beijing’s sights.

Pro-Beijing media is now openly talking about restrictions on religion in Hong Kong. According to Ta Kung Pao, Lawrence Ma, the executive director of the Hong Kong Legal Exchange Foundation, has called on the Hong Kong government to abrogate an old colonial law, the Chinese Temple Ordinance, to reapply it to all religions. In other words, to impose new administrative measures on religion.

Ma went further in an unprovoked attack, arguing “Western” religions are incompatible with Chinese culture, claiming — falsely — that they “encourage us to forget our ancestors.” Read more

Transgender Who Raped Multiple Women in Hospital Spared Prison Because “Women Can’t Rape Women”.

One of his attacks was caught on CCTV. But law enforcement refused to accept it as a possibility because in the all-women hospital, it was “impossible” for the victim to have been raped by a fellow woman.

In our post-truth society, transgender “women” are allowed to intermingle with biological women in the most intimate circumstances. Bathrooms, locker rooms, and hospitals where women are most exposed and vulnerable are ripe playgrounds for biological men who want to prey on them under the banner of LGBTQ+ idiocy. Read more
